Frequently asked questions
What is JPEG XL (.jxl)?
JPEG XL is a modern image format that offers smaller files than JPEG at the same quality, plus lossless compression and wide color support. Browser support is still rolling out, so you often need to convert JXL files to JPG or PNG to view or share them.
Why can’t I open a .jxl file?
As of 2026, most browsers and apps do not yet display JPEG XL by default. Converting the file to JPG or PNG makes it open anywhere. This tool decodes JXL in your browser so you can save it in a compatible format.
Is my image uploaded?
No. Both decoding JXL and encoding to JXL run entirely in your browser using WebAssembly. Your images never leave your device.
Can I convert my photos into JPEG XL?
Yes. Choose JXL as the output format and the tool will encode your JPG, PNG or WebP images into .jxl, letting you take advantage of its smaller file sizes.
